분자역학연구실 (Molecular & Genomic Epidemiology Lab, MGEL)

연구실소개

분자유전체역학 연구실(MGEL, Molecular & Genomic Epidemiology Lab)은 암의 원인 규명과 예방을 위한 분자유전체역학 연구를 하는 연구실입니다. MGEL에서는 크게 유전체 코호트 연구, 유방암 환자-대조군 연구, 위암 환자-대조군 연구를 수행하고 있습니다.

MGEL의 첫번째 연구분야는 유전체 코호트 연구입니다. 역학적 요인, 생활/식이습관, 유전적요인 등을 전향적으로 연구하여 암의 biomarker를 발견하고 입증하는 것을 목표로 삼고 있습니다. 2004년부터 25만명규모의 유전체 코호트 연구를 시작하였으며, 이는 아시아에서 손꼽히는 규모입니다. 본 연구를 통해 한국인에서 호발하는 질병을 예방하는데 큰 기여를 할 수 있을 것입니다.

MGEL의 두번째 연구분야는 환자-대조군 연구를 통한 유방암과 위암 연구입니다. 병원 기반의 환자군을 질병이 없는 대조군과 비교하여 유방암과 위암의 발병에 영향을 미치는 요인을 연구합니다. 대상자의 기본적인 역학요인, 생활/식이습관 등이 암에 미치는 영향을 연구함과 동시에 candidate gene approach와 GWAS를 통해 암의 발달과 예후에 관련된 유전자-유전자 상호작용과 유전자-환경 상호작용에 대한 연구를 수행하고 있습니다.

교수소개

- Research in Dr. Kang’s laboratory, also known as the Molecular & Genomic Epidemiology Lab (MGEL) focuses on molecular- and genome- epidemiological study for cancer etiology and prevention. Cancers of interest included breast, gastric cancer, childhood leukemia.
- The candidate gene approach and high-throughput technology like GWAS are used to identify gene-gene and gene- environment interactions in cancer development and prognosis.
- The main research areas inof MGEL include genomic cohort research, in breast cancer.
(1) Since 2004, we have been conducting the Large-Scale Genomic Cohort Study (includes 300,000 healthy subjects), that is one of the largest cohorts in Asia which can do pivotal role in evaluating the genomic variation, environment, gene-environment interaction and risk of diseases. This large cohort can also be the most significant resource for biomarker discovery and validation.
(2) The second research area in MGEL is the breast cancer study. Since 1993, we have estimated the risk between genetic variation and breast cancer according to the estrogen and the progesterone receptor status. Our work also stretches to areas in epigenomics and the pharmacogenomics (pharmacogenetics).

연구실소개

정밀의학 연구실은 생물학적 메카니즘에 기반하여 최신의 방법론을 통하여 만성 질병 발생의 원인을 밝혀내어 만성 질병 발생을 예측하는 알고리즘을 개발, 궁극적으론 만성 질병 예방을 목표로 한다. 인구집단 대규모 자료원 및 병원 기반 임상 자료원을 이용하여 역학적, 통계학적 방법론에서부터 머신러닝/딥러닝 및 GWAS를 포함한 멀티오믹스 기반 분자 역학적 연구를 수행하여 질병 원인 발굴 및 바이오마커를 선별하는 연구를 수행하고 있다.

특히 유방암, 난소암 등의 호르몬 생식 관련 여성암과 위암등의 소화기계 암 발생 원인을 중점적으로 연구한다. Hormone biosynthesis-metabolism-transport axis 및 infection-inflammation-immunity axis에 초점을 맞추어 유전적 및 생리학적 표지에 대한 연구를 수행중이다.

한국형 다기관 암 코호트 (Korean Multicenter Cancer Cohort) 의 책임연구자로서 코호트를 운영 중이며 국내 여러 연구기관들과 협력연구를 진행 중이다. Asia Cohort Consortium (ACC), Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1/2 (CIMBA), Breast Cancer Association Consortium (BCAC), Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium (OCAC)를 포함한 국제 공동 연구도 활발히 진행 중이다.

교수소개

Dr. Park conducts genetic and molecular epidemiologic studies to identify susceptible genetic markers in the exposure-to-disease continuum, as well as serological biomarkers and prognosis in the development of various cancers. She studies gastrointestinal cancers (stomach and biliary tract cancers) and endocrine cancers that are female dominant (breast and thyroid cancers), focusing on the etiologic heterogeneity of cancers. Her ongoing studies include investigations of genetic and serological markers with particular emphasis on hormone biosynthesis-metabolism-transport axis and infection-inflammation-immunity axis. Studies in the identification of genetic and molecular markers utilizing novel biological methods are also underway. She has conducted a series of methodological investigation derived from clinical epidemiologic studies and medical statistics.

만성병역학 연구실은 우리나라 주요 발생 암종인 대장암의 발생 위험 및 예후 요인 연구를 중심으로 활발히 연구를 진행하는 연구실입니다. 대장암은 식이 및 생활요인에 의한 영향을 많이 받는 암종으로, 만성병역학 연구실에서는 대표적으로 암 발생의 기여 위험 분율 추정, 대장암 환자군의 유전자-환경 상호작용 평가, 대장암 발생 및 예후와 관련된 식이 및 생활요인에 대한 연구를 수행하고 있습니다. 국민건강보험공단 DB, 서울대병원 대장암 환자코호트, UK biobank, European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), Swedish Women’s Lifestyle and Health (WLH), 도시기반코호트 (HEXA) 등의 다양한 자료원을 이용하여 대장암의 위험 요인 및 예후 요인에 대한 연구를 수행하고 있습니다.

교수소개

Professor Aesun Shin’s research focuses on colorectal cancer epidemiology. Her publications cover the areas of descriptive epidemiology, validity of screening modality, genetic susceptibility and lifestyle risk factors of colorectal cancer. She is actively involved in genetic and molecular epidemiological studies for cancers of stomach, breast, and thyroid. She is also interested in risk factors for metabolic syndrome and osteoporosis, and determinant of dietary habits. For the graduate courses she teaches analytical methods of descriptive epidemiology, energy balance and health, and epidemiology of cancer and other chronic diseases. She is involved in several international collaborations such as genome-wide association study (GWAS) for colorectal cancer, and lifestyle factors/molecular markers and disease associations within consortia.
Before joining Seoul National University College of Medicine, Prof. Shin was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Vanderbilt University between 2004 and 2007 and a senior scientist at the National Cancer Center, Korea since 2007.

연구실소개

직업환경역학 연구실은 직업 및 환경요인 노출과 건강의 연관성에 관한 연구에 중점을 두고 있다. 직업적 요인으로 근로조건이 취약한 자영업자, 비정규직 근로자의 신체 및 정신건강에 관한 연구를 수행하였으며, 특히 공개자료원을 이용하여 산업재해 발생 규모 및 역학적 특성을 파악하는 연구를 진행 중에 있다.

또한, 환경요인 노출에 관한 연구로서 중금속, 내분비계 교란 물질 등 유해물질 노출과 건강의 관련성뿐 아니라, 대용량 자료를 활용한 공원 및 녹지, 대기오염, 야간 빛 공해, 소음의 건강 영향에 관한 연구를 활발히 진행 중에 있다. 최근에는 신규 자연재난으로 포함된 폭염 및 한파로 인한 질병 발생을 관련성을 밝히고 예측모형을 개발하는 등, 환경요인이 초래할 수 있는 신체 및 정신질환을 다양하게 연구하고 있다. 그 외 스마트폰 중독 관련 요인 및 사고 발생 위험을 규명하여, 행동중독 분야에도 관심을 기울이고 있다.

As an occupational and environmental medicine specialist, Professor Min's interest include occupational safety & health (inequality in precarious work, temporary, subcontract, and older workers) and health effects of exposure to environmental hazards. His research covers increased risk for work-related disease and absenteeism in subcontractors, workplace injustice and occupational health, suicide risk in precarious employment, social engagement, health, and occupational status changes in older workers, job stress and the risk of occupational injury in small- to medium-sized manufacturing enterprises, and changes in occupational safety and health indices after the Korean economic crisis. He has also published many papers associated with the effect of clinical and environmental health on heavy metals, persistent organic compounds, polyfluorinated compounds, antioxidants, inflammatory biomarkers, and environmental noise.

Professor Lee reads clinical epidemiology and clinical preventive medicine. Clinical epidemiology is a marriage between quantitative concepts used by epidemiologists to study disease in populations and decision-making in the individual case, which is the daily fare of clinical medicine. His laboratory conducts researches to evaluate the utilization, effectiveness, harm, and value of medical interventions, including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and preventive service programs. He is also interested in developing indexes or rating scales to measure health phenomena and applying indexes to measure and improve health outcomes in patients or a community-based population.

교수소개

I am an infectious disease epidemiologist with an interdisciplinary expertise in health economics.
My research focuses on streamlining health economic and epidemiology methods through innovative data-gathering, analytic methods in both model and field-based studies in disease areas of (not limited to) Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS.

My primary interests are:
1) Evaluating the value of novel health technologies and interventions, particularly in the areas of diagnostics and case-finding strategies for infectious diseases.
In doing so, I employ traditional epidemiology, health economics (e.g., cost and cost-effectiveness analysis), and modeling (e.g., decision analysis) methods to generate evidence relevant for new local, national, and global level policies.

2) Improving methods to streamline health economic evaluation in larger epidemiological and clinical trials.
In this area, my research efforts aim to help design and integrate a wide range of costing studies in the context of larger cohort or clinical trials. In doing so, I aim to improve empiric evidence on costs (both health services and patient perspective) and cost-effectiveness of public health interventions.

3) Implementation Science: Interventions that has scientifically proven to be effective (e.g., ideal settings) often face many implementation barriers in their ‘real-world’ application.
I am interested in evaluating the relationship between implementation barriers and patient-important, health systems, and epidemiological outcomes as well as associated costs.

4) Teaching and mentorship: Mentors in my life have transformed my own teaching, research, and mentorship philosophy.
I value reciprocal and mutual learning-focused culture that benefits both the mentors and mentees in advancing multi-disciplinary learning experience.
Through reflective dialogues and feedback process, I aim to create a learning environment that can help enrich understanding of our practices, gain perspectives of others (and other disciplines), and ultimately help mentees grow as future mentors.

Research in Dr. Lee focuses on the health effects of environmental and occupational exposures. His work spans prospective and retrospective cohort studies, including birth cohorts and national big data, with major interests in endocrine-disrupting chemicals, air pollution, occupational health systems, and microplastics. He also has broad experience in occupational health practice, environmental medicine, and health policy, and is committed to integrating research, education, and service to advance evidence-based prevention and healthier workplaces and communities.
